The temperate rainforest rewards the early riser. Before the trailhead fills, the moss-hung canopy of the Hoh sits in a soft, filtered green that photographers dream about, and the dawn chorus rolls through the valley like water.
We set up before first light near a mossy log the deer seemed to favor, then sat still while the forest woke around us — a varied thrush somewhere upslope, a dipper working the creek, and finally a doe stepping into the clearing as if we weren't there.
